YouTube Video Description Generator Tool

Video descriptions are the written content that goes along with your video and its details. Both YouTube and Vimeo allow for long video descriptions, up to 5,000 characters long.

However, most YouTube videos don’t use all 5,000 characters. It’s not about stuffing your descriptions with keywords; instead, you should use your character limit wisely, focusing on both video SEO and providing value to your viewers. Keep reading, and we’ll explain how to do this effectively.

Why is the YouTube Description important?

Just like video titles, video descriptions serve a dual purpose: they help with video SEO by including relevant keywords and providing viewers with a summary of the video. Descriptions can also include links to other parts of the video, your website, social media, or other videos and resources.

If you’re not part of YouTube’s Partner Program (which requires a minimum of 1,000 subscribers), you can’t add clickable links in your videos that direct viewers to your website. The only way to add links is in the video descriptions.

What should you write in a YouTube Description?

Video descriptions on YouTube show only the first 3 lines (about 280 characters) when a video is first loaded. On Vimeo, you get more space, with 750 characters visible initially. Since YouTube is the main platform for online videos, it’s crucial to put the most important words at the beginning of your description.

It’s important to note that truncated descriptions are only visible to desktop users. Mobile users won’t see any of the descriptions unless they choose to expand it.

To find the truncation point, try different lengths in your description. SEOptimer does this well by ending its description just in time for the call to action to visit its website.

Video SEO

YouTube’s Creator Academy shared 7 key tips for making your YouTube descriptions effective, and the top tip was to “write searchable descriptions.”

It’s a good idea to use your main keyword or phrase several times in your video description. This helps make your video more relevant and can improve its ranking in search results for those keywords.

Adding value to the viewing experience

To make it easier for your viewers to understand your video and learn about you, we recommend dividing your video description into seven main sections:

  • About the Video (about 500-1,000 characters): The first three lines are crucial, so include your target keywords and describe the video to match how people might search for it. Then, you can add more details and secondary information about the video. Remember to include your video hashtags at the end.

  • Timestamps (about 500 characters): This is a helpful feature that allows you to include links to specific parts of your video. For instance, if your video has 5 different sections or “chapters,” you can link to each one here. This allows viewers to easily jump to the part of the video that interests them the most.

But how do you make these links? It’s simple! Just type the time in minutes and seconds, and YouTube will automatically turn it into a clickable link – easy!

By adding timestamps in the video description, YouTube automatically includes them at the bottom of the video in the play bar.

  • About the Channel (about 500-1,000 characters): Here, you should provide a brief overview of your channel, including the type of content you create and how often you upload new videos.

  • Other Recommended Videos/Playlists (about 250 characters): You can promote some of your other videos or playlists by linking directly to them. Provide a brief description or catchy line for each to encourage viewers to click and watch.

It’s okay to link to videos you haven’t published yet! Just leave the links out for now and update this section when you’ve published them.

  • About Your Products & Company (about 500-1,000 characters): Describe what your organization does and the products or services you offer.

  • Website Link (approx 50 chars): Don’t forget to link to your website!

  • Contact & Social Links (approx 100-500 chars): Finally, link to some of your other social media pages and profiles, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.

How does the Video Description Generator work?

The Video Description Maker is a useful tool for organizing and creating SEO-friendly video descriptions that appeal to viewers. It guides you through creating seven distinct sections that you can customize and then copy as a complete description to paste into YouTube or Vimeo.

Simply start at the top and go through each section. If you don’t need a section, just uncheck it. At the bottom of the seventh section, you’ll find three keyword fields labeled “Keywords to Target.”

You can enter up to three keywords here to check their occurrence throughout your entire video description. If your keyword is mentioned five times or more, the count will be highlighted in green, indicating an ideal number for SEO. If it’s mentioned fewer times, it will be highlighted in red, suggesting that you should include it more often. Click “Generate Description” to update your keyword usage stats.

When you’re done, just click “Copy to Clipboard,” and you’re all set to paste your new video description into YouTube!

Updating Video Descriptions on existing Videos

Just like editing video titles, tags, or hashtags, you can also edit video descriptions on your existing videos without any problems. However, when you make these edits, YouTube re-evaluates your video, which can impact its position in search results based on the changes you’ve made and the previous watch time data.

This can have both positive and negative effects. Updating the description could improve your video’s search ranking if it wasn’t well-optimized and wasn’t getting many views. However, if your video was already performing well, changing the description could disrupt its performance.
